What is a DPF?
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas on a modern diesel engine. After the accumulation of a minimum level of soot, a regeneration process injects diesel (or another fluid) to increase exhaust temperature high enough to combust the soot, leaving ash. This cycle continues for the filter's life.
What causes DPF issues?
A working DPF only slightly increases back pressure. Issues arise when regeneration cannot occur. Common causes include:
- System Faults. Any engine fault will prevent regeneration because the ECU closely monitors the process.
- Vehicle Driving. Regeneration needs minimum speed, temperature, and drive time. Short trips cause issues; longer commutes help.
- DPF Aging. Filters are service items. Cleaning or forced regeneration on an overdue filter may not help.
